“Our environment is the invisible hand that shapes human behavior”.
- James Clear, Atomic Habits
Hi, I’m Channing Porter, a designer who is infinitely curious about the physical and digital spaces we inhabit and their ability to transform our experience in this world.
I love spaces! Ask anyone who knows me, I look at the google vibes of a restaurant before the food, when I walk into a Frank Lloyd Wright house I feel a calmness and meditative state takeover. When I can seamlessly move through the Delta app to book, call, and check my flight with ease, I’m in flow.
Noticing the space around me and how others feel in it has been a part of my DNA ever since I can remember. With a fifteen year background in sales, coaching, consulting, and account management in areas from non-profit work in the developing world to renewable energy and social enterprises, my success has come from asking what problems need to be solved and being humble and adaptable in my solutions.
I’ve had the opportunity to work cross-culturally and develop a sales strategy for an in-home toilet pilot project in the slums of Kenya, expanding sales operations for the only recycling company in Kenya, and even starting a socially responsible solar lead generation business in California. In the midst of the pandemic, I worked as head account manager to onboard dropship programs and develop a virtual trade show for a wholesale handmade goods social enterprise.
My approach has always been focussed on human-centered design. I learned this first hand in Cambodia, when research showed families still cared about the aesthetics of latrines, even when they had never had or used one before. Designing for the user and immersing myself in their environment is key to the success of any product. As a designer with a background in sales and business, I understand goals of both the user and stakeholders and am able to facilitate win-win solutions.
Beyond design, you can find me in my car on a solo road-trip, talking endlessly about sustainability, or the latest On Being, The Daily or Ezra Klein podcast I recently listened to.
